Lusajo Israel, widely known by his stage name Sajo, is a pioneering Tanzanian hip-hop artist and a founding member of the legendary group Daz Nundaz. His musical origins trace back to his time at Makongo Secondary School in Dar es Salaam, where he first began collaborating with fellow students Ferooz (Feruzi Rehani) and Critic (Noely Michael Kapinga). Initially performing under the name “O-Rang U-Tang,” the group later expanded to include “Daz Baba and La Rumba,” rebranding as Daz “Nundaz,” an acronym for the "Dangerous Zone of Nundaz."
Sajo became a central figure in the "Golden Era" of Bongo Flava during the early 2000s. Operating out of the prestigious Bongo Records studio under the mentorship of producer P-Funk Majani, the group released their landmark debut album, “Kamanda,” in 2001. Sajo’s lyrical delivery and authentic street presence were essential to the success of timeless hits like "Kamanda," "Barua," and "Maji Ya Shingo." His artistry was deeply connected to the "Sewer Side" movement, a hip-hop subculture rooted in the Temeke district that prioritized social realism and community storytelling over commercial pop trends.
Beyond the success of his group, Sajo was a versatile contributor to the wider Bongo Records stable. He is notably featured on the track "Usiku Huu" from Daz Baba’s 2004 album “Elimu Dunia,” alongside the artist Mr. Blue. Today, Sajo is honored as a foundational architect of Tanzanian urban music, credited with helping transform street-level rap into a respected regional industry.
