Ziggy Marley, born David Nesta Marley in Kingston, Jamaica, is a Grammy-winning singer, songwriter, musician, producer, and philanthropist who has established an independent career within reggae while carrying forward the musical heritage of his father, Bob Marley. He learned guitar and drums from his father and participated in recording sessions with the Wailers from childhood. In 1979, he recorded “Children Playing in the Streets” with siblings Cedella, Stephen and Sharon, leading to the formation of Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers.
The Melody Makers released their debut album, "Play the Game Right," in 1985. Their international breakthrough came with "Conscious Party" in 1988, which included “Tomorrow People” and earned a Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album. The group followed with "One Bright Day" and "Fallen Is Babylon," both of which also won Grammys in the same category. Across their career, the Melody Makers released ten studio albums and became a major international reggae act.
Marley began his solo career with "Dragonfly" in 2003, followed by "Love Is My Religion" in 2006. The latter became his first solo Grammy-winning album. His subsequent releases include "Family Time," "Wild and Free," "Ziggy Marley in Concert," "Fly Rasta," "Ziggy Marley," and "Rebellion Rises." "Family Time" earned the Grammy for Best Musical Album for Children, while "Fly Rasta" and "Ziggy Marley" received Best Reggae Album awards.
Beyond recording, Marley has worked in film, publishing, and charitable initiatives. He served as executive producer and musical adviser on the documentary "Marley" and later contributed to the production of "Bob Marley: One Love." He founded the U.R.G.E. Foundation, supporting children, education and healthcare initiatives in Jamaica and other communities.
With multiple Grammy Awards spanning group and solo work, Ziggy Marley has built a career defined by reggae, songwriting, production, and social engagement, while developing an artistic identity distinct from his father's legacy.
