Chief Zavara, also known as MC Rhymson, whose birth name is Zavara Ramadhani Mponjika, was born on 24 November 1968 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. He is widely regarded as one of the foundational figures in the development of Tanzanian hip hop. Beginning his journey in the late 1980s, at a time when hip hop culture was just beginning to appear in Dar es Salaam, he became part of the first generation of artists shaping the genre’s direction in the country.
In the early 1990s, he founded the group Villain Gangsters and later became a founding member of Kwanza Unit, a collective that played a crucial role in formalizing and promoting hip hop culture in Tanzania. Through this platform, Rhymson emphasized socially conscious rap, the use of Swahili language in lyrics, and the integration of Tanzanian musical influences into hip hop production.
Beyond performing and recording, he has remained active as a cultural advocate, encouraging youth participation in hip hop elements such as emceeing, DJing, and community education. His long-standing involvement has made him a respected figure whose early contributions continue to influence the evolution of Tanzanian rap music.
