Journey
Zal Idrissa Sissokho, born in Senegal, stands as a linchpin of cultural artistry, melding traditional kora sounds with an international tapestry of music influences. Raised in the griot lineage from Kolda, his journey to Montreal in 1999 marked the beginning of a profound cross-continental artistic exploration. Zal swiftly integrated into the Canadian music landscape, securing scholarships from the Canadian and Quebec Arts Councils, which invigorated his collaborations with a variety of artists. His ensemble, Buntalo, exemplifies this adventurous spirit, intertwining Afro-Mandingo traditions with diverse global sounds like Brazilian rhythms, Quebecois folk, reggae, and flamenco.
His discography reflects an artist constantly evolving: from 'Silaba' (2008) to 'La Palabre' (2017), his albums ponder themes of migration, social dialogue, and ancestral legacy. The 2020 collaboration on 'Kora Flamenca' with guitarist Caroline Planté highlights his innovative blend of kora and Spanish flamenco, earning both the Félix Award and Canadian Folk Music Award. Beyond musical albums, Zal's impact includes contributing to the film 'L'Autre Maison,' featured at the Montreal World Film Festival in 2013. Through music and performance, Sissokho continues to act as a dynamic conduit for cultural dialogue, sparking connections across time and medium.
