Ntokozo Blessing Zakwe, professionally known as Zakwe, was born on March 8, 1988, in KwaMashu, a lively township in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Surrounded by rhythm, language, and everyday stories, he grew up deeply connected to the pulse of his community. As a teenager, he began writing poetry verses about life, struggle, and hope, which later evolved into rap lyrics that echoed the realities of township life and the richness of Zulu identity.
After finishing high school, Zakwe attended the Durban University of Technology, but financial constraints forced him to drop out. Undeterred, he poured his energy into underground rap battles and mixtapes, refining his lyrical voice and storytelling craft. His mixtape series, Street Music Vol. 1 and 2, built him a local following and eventually caught the attention of Zuluboy, who helped him sign with Native Rhythms, marking the beginning of his professional career.
In 2011, Zakwe released his self-titled debut album, Zakwe, a defining moment in South African hip-hop. The project fused heavy beats with fluent Zulu rhymes and township slang, painting vivid portraits of urban life, ambition, and resilience. The album became a historic milestone — the first Zulu hip-hop album to achieve gold certification by the Recording Industry of South Africa (RISA). It also earned five South African Music Award nominations, including Best Hip-Hop Album, Male Artist of the Year, and Newcomer of the Year, cementing his reputation as a leading voice in local rap.
A year later, he released the Zakwe Deluxe Edition, which added new tracks and a live performance DVD, further expanding his reach. His follow-up projects, Impande (2015) and Cebisa (2018), showcased his maturity as both writer and performer. Impande earned him recognition at the South African Hip Hop Awards and the South African Traditional Music Awards, where he won Best Vernacular Hip Hop Artist for his hit “Reverse.” Meanwhile, Cebisa continued his commercial success and also achieved gold certification.
Zakwe’s music is celebrated for its poetic realism and cultural integrity. He raps primarily in Zulu, crafting verses that balance street wisdom with lyrical elegance. His songs often explore identity, perseverance, social truth, and pride in heritage, earning him the reputation of being a “voice of the people.” Critics and fans alike describe his style as street poetry- raw, reflective, and profoundly authentic.
Over the years, Zakwe has graced major stages, from the South African Music Awards and Metro FM Awards to sharing the spotlight with international stars like Kanye West during his 2013 Johannesburg concert. His legacy has inspired a new generation of rappers to embrace vernacular hip-hop, proving that local languages can command both respect and mainstream appeal.
Despite fame, Zakwe remains grounded, private, and purposeful. He prioritises authenticity over celebrity and continues to use his influence to motivate young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to pursue their dreams.
