Zaki Ibrahim is a critically acclaimed artist whose music defies traditional categorization, blending elements of soul, jazz, and electronic music into a style often described as Afrofuturist. Born in British Columbia in 1983, Ibrahim was raised in a household defined by social activism and artistic exploration. Her father, Zane Ibrahim, was a foundational figure in South African community radio, and his legacy of using art as a vehicle for change deeply influenced Zaki’s creative philosophy.
Ibrahim’s professional journey began in Toronto’s vibrant independent scene, where her early EPs garnered immediate attention. Her breakout success came with the 2009 JUNO-nominated single "Money" and her 2012 debut album, Every Opposite. This project merged South African house rhythms with North American R&B, featuring standout songs like "Heartbeat." The album was a critical darling, earning a spot on the Polaris Music Prize shortlist and establishing her as a global talent.
Following the loss of her father and the birth of her son, Ibrahim relocated to South Africa, a move that sparked a period of deep introspection. This transition culminated in her 2018 sophomore album, “The Secret Life of Planets,” highlighted by the mesmerizing track "Do Better."
