Gomolemo Joy Gumede, professionally known as Xduppy (or sometimes X Duppy), is a South African DJ, producer, and rising star in the amapiano scene. He is from Hammanskraal in Tshwane, and was raised in a musical household: his father was a fan of house music and his mother listened to gospel.
He has shared that he first developed an interest in music while in primary school, being exposed to R&B and gospel through his family, then later discovering hip-hop. He began producing in the late 2010s (around 2017–2018), even before having access to his own laptop, sometimes borrowing one from friends.
He is the firstborn of two children. Growing up, he describes himself as fairly quiet, studious, and self-contained, often expressing himself through music rather than talk.
Xduppy’s breakthrough came in 2023 with the release of the single “Bhebha” (a collaboration with ShaunMusiQ & Ftears, Myztro, Mellow & Sleazy). The track became very popular, particularly on TikTok and in South Africa’s amapiano and electronic music spaces.
Another significant song is “Baja ko Pele”, which also drew a lot of attention and reached high view counts on streaming platforms. He is signed to Kgaday Records, which is a sister label to DJ Maphorisa’s New Money Gang Records. Through this, he has had mentorship and collaboration support, which helped refine his sound and exposure. His first major project (EP or album) that got wide notice is Joy (2023), which has enhanced his reputation.
Xduppy is primarily known for amapiano, a South African genre blending deep house, jazz, lounge, and rhythm & blues, but he also brings in influences from house, electronic production, hip-hop, and what he and his peers refer to as the “Bacardi sound”. His style tends to meld dance-floor energy with melodic and rhythmic elements that are typical in amapiano, but with a rawness and street-inflected energy.
“Bhebha” achieved double platinum status in South Africa, which marks a major commercial success. His songs have gathered large streaming numbers: for example, “Bhebha” has tens of millions of streams. He has worked closely with established artists like DJ Maphorisa, Myztro, Mellow & Sleazy, ShaunMusiQ, Ftears, Daliwonga, and others. He has released multiple projects: Joy (2023), Umswenko EP (with Scotts Maphuma & Mellow & Sleazy) in 2024. He is increasingly charting on platforms like Apple Music and has been part of high-profile collaborations and joint albums (for example, with DJ Maphorisa) that boost his profile.
