Viwolwethu Kulati, known as Viwo, is a South African jazz, soul, and Afro-pop vocalist popular for her warm tone, emotionally expressive delivery, and genre-blending approach that fuses jazz sensibilities with R&B and African musical influences.
Born and raised in Makhanda (formerly Grahamstown) in South Africa’s Eastern Cape, she grew up in a musically rich environment shaped by family influence, school music programs, and exposure to the National Arts Festival, which played a key role in developing her early passion for performance and composition.
She later pursued formal music training, studying jazz and classical voice at Victoria Girls’ High School before advancing to jazz studies at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), where she refined her vocal technique and songwriting structure.
Viwo first gained wider recognition through her work in jazz and live performance circuits, including appearances at the National Arts Festival and collaborations within South Africa’s live jazz scene. She has shared stages with established acts such as Thandiswa Mazwai and Zonke Dikana, reinforcing her reputation as a strong live performer with a growing national profile.
Her recorded career began to take shape with the release of her debut single “Chilly Breeze” in 2019, a soul-jazz track exploring relationship dynamics from a female perspective—challenging one-sided narratives of love and heartbreak.
She later expanded her catalogue with projects and singles centered on emotional and spiritual themes, including the EP “Love”, which reflects on human connection, vulnerability, and the importance of affection in everyday life.
