Boitumelo "Tumi" Molekane was born on August 16, 1981, in Tanzania while his parents were in political exile. He returned to South Africa in 1992, and his experiences as a child of the struggle deeply informed his career as a rapper, poet, and cultural critic.
Tumi rose to international fame in the early 2000s as the frontman of Tumi and the Volume. The band became iconic for blending hip-hop with live jazz and soul instrumentation, a style showcased in their seminal 2004 album, At the Bassline. As a lyricist, Tumi was celebrated for his storytelling, intellectual depth, and social commentary. His solo discography includes essential albums like “Whole Worlds,” (2010), which featured a diverse range of international influences, and the critically acclaimed “Return of the King,” (2015).
Throughout his career, Tumi has been a pillar of the South African hip-hop community. He founded Motif Records, which was instrumental in launching the careers of several major artists, and has collaborated with legends such as Khuli Chana and Reason. Known for hits like "In Defense of My Art," "Feel So Good," and the powerful "76," he is widely regarded as one of the greatest lyricists the African continent has ever produced. In 2016, he began releasing music under the moniker Stogie T, but his foundation as "Tumi" remains the cornerstone of his legacy as a musical poet.
