Toshi Tikolo is a South African singer-songwriter, poet, guitarist, and performer whose work has become closely associated with the rise of Afro-house and soulful electronic music. Originally from KwaLanga in Cape Town with roots in the Eastern Cape, she developed her artistic foundation through poetry, live instrumentation, and vocal performance from an early age. Her expressive delivery and spiritually infused songwriting later distinguished her within South Africa’s house music scene.
She gained widespread recognition after collaborating with Black Coffee on the acclaimed single “Buya,” a release that introduced her voice to international Afro-house audiences. The success of the track led to collaborations with producers and artists including Black Motion, Da Capo, Timmy Regisford, Afro Warriors, Lemon & Herb, and Stones & Bones.
Rather than approaching house music purely as dance entertainment, Toshi’s work emphasizes storytelling, spirituality, emotional healing, and African identity. Her compositions often incorporate isiXhosa and isiZulu lyrics layered over deep rhythmic arrangements and soulful electronic production. Themes of ancestry, resilience, love, and self-discovery remain central to her artistic expression.
