Matthys Lourens Streicher, better known by his stage name Thys die Bosveldklong, was a cornerstone of South African entertainment for over two decades. Born in June 1974, he successfully blended the roles of a talented musician and a naturally gifted comedian, earning a reputation as the "jester" of the Afrikaans music world. His stage persona characterized by a rugged, "bushveld" charm and an irrepressible sense of humor endeared him to a wide demographic of fans.
His career was defined by chart-topping successes that became cultural touchstones. Songs like "Jaloers-Bokkie" and "Swakopmund" were more than just radio hits; they became essential anthems at weddings, festivals, and social gatherings across South Africa and Namibia. His ability to find humor in the mundane, coupled with his high-energy performances, ensured that his albums achieved significant commercial success and multiple industry accolades.
Thys was also a versatile media personality. His work on television, particularly as a host for kykNET’s Net vir die Grap, highlighted his sharp wit and improvisational skills. However, his life was marked by a battle with Multiple Sclerosis. Diagnosed in 2019, he spoke openly about his health struggles, becoming an inspiration to others facing similar challenges.
Even as his physical health declined, his passion for music never wavered. He released his final project, Die Laaste Roep, in early 2024 as a farewell to his loyal supporters. Thys passed away in June 2024, leaving a void in the hearts of many, but his music continues to bring joy to dance floors nationwide.
