Thamie Sax, born Thami Peace Mahlangu, is a South African saxophonist, composer, arranger, bandleader, and music educator known for his performances and contributions to African music. He was born and raised in South Africa, where his passion for music began at a young age. Mahlangu initially started his musical journey playing the trumpet before expanding his interest to woodwind instruments. At the age of fourteen, he was introduced to the clarinet and saxophone while studying at the Moses Taiwa Molelekwa Arts Foundation, an institution dedicated to nurturing young musicians.
During his time at the foundation, he became a member of the Taiwa Jazz Band, where he gained valuable experience performing with other developing artists and learning from established musicians. His musical education was strengthened through workshops and performances, including a session with acclaimed percussionist Poncho Sanchez during the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz. These early opportunities helped shape his discipline, stage presence, and artistic direction.
As his career progressed, Thamie Sax established himself as a versatile instrumentalist within South Africa’s music.
