Thabsie, born Bathabise Biyela on 5 November 1991 in Cape Town, is a South African singer and songwriter known for her warm R&B-influenced voice and emotionally honest music. She grew up surrounded by creativity, spending much of her childhood singing, writing, and participating in school choirs, which laid the foundation for her artistic path.
After matriculating, she moved to Johannesburg, where she studied Economics at the University of Johannesburg. Before fully stepping into the music industry, she worked for two years at an investment bank. Even during this period, she continued performing as a backing vocalist for top artists including Cassper Nyovest, Khuli Chana and ProVerb, slowly building her confidence and presence behind the scenes.
Thabsie gained national attention in 2016 when she featured on Kwesta’s hit “Ngiyaz’fela Ngawe,” a track that became one of the biggest South African love songs of its time. The success of the collaboration opened doors for her solo career, leading to the release of her debut single “Cry” and her first album Songs About You in 2017. The project produced successful singles such as “African Queen”, which earned platinum certification, and “Ubuyanini,” which was certified gold.
After years of visibility, Thabsie took a step back from releasing music, openly speaking about dealing with imposter syndrome and the pressure of the industry. Her return marked a shift toward a refined Afro-R&B direction, a sound that aligns more closely with her personal taste and vocal style. Her comeback single “Same Place” signaled this new chapter.
