Tebogo Phakela, known to fans simply as Tete, is one of Johannesburg’s most intriguing new voices, a singer and songwriter who channels the pulse of the city’s streets into Afro-funk and Afro-house music. Raised in Hillbrow and the heart of Johannesburg Central, he grew up amid township life, taxi ranks, late-night shebeens, and street jams that shaped his musical foundation.
Before the release of “Bra God” in 2023, Tete was building his identity in the city’s urban music space. Working closely with producer Thakzin, he explored kwaito, funk, and house sounds while shaping his storytelling style based on everyday life in the kasi.
“Bra God” was his debut album and a clear statement of intent. The title track carries strong energy. Collaborations with Leko M, Earful Soul, and Zanda Zakuza show his ability to bring different voices and styles into one project. Tracks like “Animkhuzeni” and “Siyaphela” reflect both celebratory and reflective sides of township life, presenting Johannesburg in a direct way. His work is personal and easy to connect with.
Tete has built a network of collaborators within Johannesburg’s urban music space. His work with Thakzin, Leko M, Zanda Zakuza, and Earful Soul places him within Afro-funk and dancefloor-focused production, making him a name gaining attention in South Africa’s music space.
He documents life in Hillbrow and Johannesburg Central through his music. “Bra God” reflects everyday experiences from those areas in a clear way. He continues to release new music and work with other artists, expanding his reach beyond South Africa.
