Tamar Estine Braxton, known by her stage name Tamar Braxton, has built a multifaceted career as an R&B singer, songwriter, actress, television personality, and media figure. Born in Severn, Maryland, she grew up in the musical Braxton family and began performing in church before entering the professional music world alongside her sisters.
In 1989, Tamar became part of The Braxtons with Toni, Traci, Towanda, and Trina. The group eventually released “So Many Ways” in 1996, giving Tamar her first significant experience in the recording industry. She later worked as a backing vocalist and songwriter, including contributions to projects associated with her sister Toni.
Tamar launched her solo career with the album “Tamar” in 2000. Although the project did not immediately establish her as a major commercial star, it provided the foundation for a career that would eventually reach a much wider audience. Her breakthrough arrived with “Love and War” in 2013. The album climbed to No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and introduced a more mature and emotionally focused version of Tamar as an artist. The title track became one of her best-known songs, while “The One” and “All the Way Home” further strengthened the album's impact.
“Love and War” transformed Tamar's awards profile. At the 2013 Soul Train Music Awards, she won three honors, including Best R&B/Soul Female Artist, Song of the Year, and the Ashford & Simpson Songwriter's Award. The album also earned multiple Grammy nominations, while “If I Don't Have You” brought another nomination. Tamar has received four Grammy nominations throughout her career without winning a Grammy. After “Love and War,” Tamar released “Calling All Lovers” in 2015 and “Bluebird of Happiness” in 2017.
Television greatly expanded her audience. Tamar became a central figure on “Braxton Family Values,” which premiered in 2011 and followed the personal and professional lives of the Braxton sisters. Her popularity led to “Tamar & Vince,” a reality series centered on her career and relationship with music executive Vincent Herbert. She later became a co-host of “The Real,” where her outspoken personality and spontaneous humor became part of her appeal.
In 2019, Tamar added another notable television achievement when she won the second season of “Celebrity Big Brother.” Her victory made her the first unanimous winner of the American version of the reality competition. She subsequently appeared in television and film projects and hosted “To Catch a Beautician,” demonstrating her ability to remain active across different areas of entertainment.
