TID, born Khalid Mohamed in 1981 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, is a prominent singer, rapper, and actor associated with the development of Bongo Flava. His stage name stands for “Top in Dar,” reflecting both his roots in Tanzania’s commercial capital and his aspirations within the emerging urban music movement.
He began his artistic journey in 1994 as part of a group known as Black Gangsters. During this period, Bongo Flava was still in its formative stage, drawing influence from hip hop, R&B, and local Tanzanian rhythms. By 1999, TID transitioned into a solo career, seeking to refine his individual identity as a vocalist and songwriter.
His breakthrough came in 2002 after signing with Poa Records and releasing the single Mrembo. The track received strong radio support and positioned him among the leading young artists of the time. Subsequent releases, including Zeze, Siamini, Nyota Yako, Kiuno, and We Dada, strengthened his standing within the genre. Zeze gained international exposure after being featured on a Putumayo World Music compilation, introducing his work to a global audience.
In addition to his music career, TID expanded into acting, appearing in the film Girlfriend, a production connected to the Bongo Flava scene. He has performed in East Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States, often accompanied by his live group, Top Band.
Throughout his career, TID has received multiple accolades, including recognition at the Tanzania Music Awards and the Kisima Music Awards. Despite personal challenges, including legal difficulties in 2008, he has remained active in the industry. Today, he is regarded as one of the artists who helped define the early era of Bongo Flava and sustain its presence within East African music.
