Journey
Soweto has produced many voices in South Africa’s house music story, and DJ Sue, born Tiisetso Motaung, is one of the names that developed through that environment with a hands-on, performance-driven approach. Her work spans DJing, songwriting, production, and live vocal performance, moving across deep house, Afro-house, and soulful house without being locked into a single direction.
Her earliest exposure to music came from home. Her father was a singer and guitarist, while her brothers DJ QT, linked to Tembisa Funk, and DJ Walker, associated with Sweety Malovey and Senyaka’s Chisa Mpama, were also active in music. That family environment created early familiarity with performance culture and studio work.
In 2003, she stepped into DJing using borrowed equipment, playing at birthday events and community gatherings around Johannesburg. Those early sets built the foundation for later club and pub residencies. As her confidence grew, her performances began to shift beyond standard DJ sets, introducing live vocal elements and original writing within her shows.
Her career later placed her on shared stages with major South African house figures including Black Coffee, DJ Cleo, DJ Kent, DJ Zinhle, Euphonik, Vinny Da Vinci, Christos, Ganyani, and Oskido. Between 2009 and 2011, she also worked as a lecturer at the Soul Candi Institute, contributing to music production training for upcoming artists.
She is credited on Chymamusique’s "After the Storm" under Sony Music Entertainment Africa as composer, lyricist, and featured contributor. Her recorded work includes "What Have I Done," "I Choose You," "Friday Night" with Ultra Tone & VaalSow, "Stars (Everlasting Love)," and "Hamba Uzobuya" with M.Patrick & Rooted.
Her sound moves through deep house, Afro-house, soulful house, with occasional amapiano influence, often combining DJ performance with live vocal elements and collaborative arrangements on stage.
