Stara Mbiti Thomas whose real name doubles as her stage name is one of Tanzania’s most enduring musical icons, a singer and songwriter whose career has spanned over two decades of the Bongo Flava and R&B era. Born in the Mwanza District, her prodigious talent was evident from early childhood; she began singing at the age of seven and was performing on professional stages with The Kilimanjaro Band and the In Africa Band while still a secondary school student.
Her early career saw her experimenting with English-language tracks like "Children’s Right," but her definitive breakthrough occurred in 2000. By embracing Swahili lyricism, she released the landmark album Nyuma Sito Rudi, featuring the massive hit "Sikia." This transition solidified her status as a household name, eventually earning her the 2003 Kilimanjaro Music Award for Best Female Vocalist.
Stara’s legacy is equally defined by her commitment to global advocacy. In 2007, she joined forces with the United Nations and the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn & Child Health to launch a major campaign in Tanzania. As a mother herself, she wrote and performed the specialized anthem "Play Your Part," aimed at reducing maternal and infant mortality rates. This project saw her working alongside global agencies like the UNFPA to mobilize communities and lobby for better access to midwives and reproductive healthcare.
