Journey
Kelvin Tebogo Khumalo, professionally known as Stakev, is a prolific South African music producer and DJ who has become a foundational pillar of the Amapiano genre. Stakev, who was born and raised in Diepkloof, Soweto, initially rooted his music in Kwaito and soulful house, which still influences his work's intricate rhythms and deep basslines. He began his professional journey around 2010, steadily building a reputation for technical precision and sonic innovation within the Gauteng club circuit.
Stakev’s career reached new heights through his close association with Kabza De Small and the Piano Hub label. He is most celebrated for pioneering the "Rekere" sub-genre—a specialized style of Amapiano characterized by its high-energy, percussive-heavy "Rekere" drums. The album “REKERE,” a 2023 collaboration, redefined the dancefloor experience in South Africa. He officially received recognition for his production mastery when he won a South African Music Award (SAMA) for Best Produced Album for his contributions to the multi-platinum "KOA II Part 1."
Beyond his technical accolades, Stakev has achieved immense commercial success. His discography features massive hits like "Kwenzenjani," which earned Gold certification, and the Platinum-selling "Rekere 2." In late 2025, he continued his momentum by releasing "Bona" and "insomnia," further blending melodic elements with his signature hard-hitting percussion.
Stakev remains a vital force in the evolution of South African dance music. He is known not just as a producer but as an architect of sound, bridging the gap between deep house's soulful foundations and Amapiano's mainstream energy. His live sets and studio productions continue to influence a new generation of "Piano" producers, ensuring that his Soweto-born sound resonates on global stages.
