Soul Star, born Velaphi Sylvester Mtimkulu in Sebokeng, Gauteng, is a South African singer-songwriter, producer, and musical director known for his contribution to soulful house, Afro-soul, and contemporary dance music. His musical background spans gospel, choral music, Isicathamiya, kwaito, and R&B, influences that later shaped his emotionally driven songwriting and layered vocal style. He first gained wider recognition through collaborations with acclaimed producer Black Coffee, notably co-writing and co-producing “Rock My World,” which became associated with the landmark 'Africa Rising' concert featuring a 24-piece orchestra.
Beyond recording, Soul Star established himself as a respected live music director, conductor, and session vocalist, contributing to productions including 'Music Is King' and major commercial campaigns such as Ballantine’s Human Orchestra project. His collaborative catalogue includes work with Culoe De Song, Heavy K, Da Capo, Black Motion, Samthing Soweto, Zakes Bantwini, and Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
After years of contributing behind the scenes as a songwriter and featured vocalist, Soul Star launched his solo career independently through Kya Soul Records. His 2017 release "Back II Soul Experience" showcased a fusion of soulful house, Afro-pop, and live instrumentation, reinforcing his reputation for blending emotionally resonant vocals with dance-oriented production. Tracks such as “Ungowami,” featuring Samthing Soweto and Fka Mash, highlighted his preference for melodic storytelling rooted in themes of love, vulnerability, and human connection.
