Lungile Nkosi, known professionally simply as Sofaya, is a rising South African Afro-Pop singer, songwriter, and entrepreneur. Born in Johannesburg, she is an artist defined by her resilience, entrepreneurial spirit, and a potent vocal style that seamlessly fuses soul, R&B, house, and contemporary African pop music.
Born and raised in the heart of Johannesburg, Sofaya's early life was marked by significant hardship, which she credits with forging her strong spirit and ambition. Her father passed away when she was just 13 years old. Following this loss, the family faced immense financial challenges, including a period of homelessness. These formative experiences instilled in her a profound drive to succeed and a deep empathy for others.
Her stage name, Sofaya, is a powerful nod to her roots, combining the name of the culturally significant Johannesburg township of Sophiatown with "Fire," symbolizing the inner strength and passion that drives her artistry.
Before fully committing to music, Sofaya built a successful career in the corporate world, gaining valuable business acumen. However, the call of her true passion was undeniable. In 2014, she made a courageous leap of faith and left her corporate job to pursue a full-time career as an entertainer.
Her public breakthrough arrived in 2016 when she auditioned for the reality competition The Voice South Africa. Her powerful blind audition performance earned the attention of all four celebrity judges, solidifying her talent in the public eye and launching her professional trajectory.
Sofaya's music is a fluid, dynamic mix that avoids strict categorization. She expertly navigates the spaces between soul, R&B, pop, house, and Afro-Pop, creating a sound that is uniquely her own.
