Journey
Nonhle Aretha Mhlongo, professionally known as Skye Wanda, is a South African singer, songwriter, producer, and DJ from Chesterville in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. She grew up in a home where music was a shared family tradition, which helped shape her early interest in performing and songwriting.
Her breakthrough moment came in 2015 when she competed on 'Idols South Africa,' reaching the Top 16 before exiting the competition due to personal reasons. Despite this setback, she remained committed to building a career in music and refining her sound.
Over time, Skye Wanda developed a style that blends Afro-pop, Afro-house, R&B, soul, and dance music. She is also recognized for her songwriting work, contributing to projects for several South African artists and producers while building her own catalogue as a solo act.
Her music gained wider attention with releases such as “Amazwi,” “Measure of Love,” and “Feela,” which highlight themes of love, healing, spirituality, and personal growth. She has collaborated with artists including Zakes Bantwini, DJ Tira, and Harrison Crump, strengthening her presence across multiple scenes.
Recognition for her contributions has come through several industry accolades. In 2022, she received the SAMRO Songwriter of the Year award at the inaugural Basadi in Music Awards, an achievement that highlighted her impact behind the scenes as a lyricist and composer. The following year, her single “Amazwi” earned the Metro FM Music Award for Best House Song, further elevating her profile nationally.
Beyond recording, she has expanded into DJing and production, further broadening her role in the industry. Skye Wanda continues to evolve as a multi-dimensional artist, balancing performance, songwriting, and creative direction within South African music.
