Skandi Soul, born Siphelo Phungula, is a South African singer, songwriter, composer, bassist, keyboardist, and producer whose music blends Maskandi, Afro-soul, jazz, R&B, and Afro-pop influences. Raised in Umzimkhulu, KwaZulu-Natal, he developed an early appreciation for traditional Zulu music, particularly the work of legendary Maskandi artist Mfaz'Omnyama, whom he credits as a major influence on his vocal style and stagecraft.
Before establishing himself as a recording artist, Skandi Soul worked extensively as a backing vocalist and musician, performing alongside artists such as Nokwazi Dlamini, Nomhle Nongogo, and Tosh. His musical training was further shaped through studies in jazz, although financial challenges prevented him from completing his tertiary education. He later served as a music director at the East Rand Christian Centre Church and founded his own company, SP Music.
He initially released a gospel project titled "New Beginnings," which received exposure on television and radio platforms, including One Gospel and regional broadcasters. His breakthrough as a solo artist came with the 2020 single “Khethile” featuring S'Villa. The song, inspired by a real-life youthful romance, gained significant attention for its fusion of Maskandi, Afro-pop, and soul elements, helping introduce his signature “Maskandi Soul” sound to a broader audience. The success of the single led to widespread recognition and established him as a distinctive voice in contemporary South African music.
Skandi Soul has continued to expand his catalogue through collaborations across multiple genres. Notable releases include “Sarafina” with Kwiish SA and Dr Thulz, which showcased his adaptability within the Amapiano landscape while maintaining his characteristic vocal delivery rooted in Maskandi traditions.
