Simmy, born Simphiwe Majobe Nhlangulela in 1994, comes from Tugela Ferry in KwaZulu-Natal, a rural community that shaped both her outlook and her sound. She grew up in a home where music was part of the household rhythm, everything from Maskandi to country played in the background, giving her an early understanding of melody and storytelling. As the youngest of four children, she learned to observe, listen, and express herself thoughtfully, traits that later became central to her musical identity.
After finishing school, she pursued Social Sciences at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. During this time, she crossed paths with Sun-EL Musician through a mutual connection, a meeting that would eventually open doors into the music industry. Although she tried her luck on talent shows like Idols SA and SA’s Got Talent, she didn’t find success there. Instead, those setbacks pushed her to refine her craft and search for her own lane.
Her move to Johannesburg marked a turning point. She spent time working behind the scenes, developing her voice, strengthening her writing, and building confidence. In 2017 she joined “EL World Music,” officially beginning her professional journey.
Her debut album, “Tugela Fairy(2018),” introduced her as a fresh and distinctive presence in South African music. Songs like “Ngiyesaba,” “Ubala,” and “Umahlalela” connected deeply with audiences and helped the album earn Platinum status. She followed it with “Tugela Fairy (Made of Stars),” in 2020 a project that broadened her sound and secured her place among the country’s most respected Afro-pop and Afro-house artists.
Over the years, Simmy has earned award nominations, industry recognition, and a loyal fanbase.
