Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr., known professionally as Shatta Wale, is a Ghanaian musician, composer, actor, entrepreneur, and CEO of the Shatta Movement Empire. Born in Accra, Ghana, he grew up in the capital and developed an early interest in music through exposure to reggae, dancehall, hip-hop, and Ghanaian popular styles. Performing primarily in English, Ghanaian Pidgin English, Ga, and Twi, he has become one of the most influential figures in contemporary Ghanaian music.
Shatta Wale first gained attention under the stage name Bandana with the hit “Moko Hoo.” After a period away from mainstream prominence, he reinvented himself as Shatta Wale, a transformation that marked a decisive turning point in his career. The success of “Dancehall King” established him as a dominant force in Ghanaian dancehall and laid the foundation for the Shatta Movement, one of the country’s largest music fan communities.
Although best known for dancehall, his work also incorporates genge, rap, trap, afrobeats, and alte influences, giving his catalog a broader contemporary reach. Since 2016 he has released songs including “Missed Call,” “3TU Black Nim Koor,” “Alright,” “We Gi Dem,” and “Ice Cream Shop.” A vocalist and keyboard player, he has worked through labels and management structures including Kadeem – UIM Records, One Kings Management, Bashment Sound SA, Zack Ariyah Productions – DJ Perf Records, and 5K Records Limited.
Shatta Wale has built significant international visibility through collaborations with artists such as Beyoncé, Major Lazer, John Legend, and Tinny. His appearance on “Already” from “The Lion King: The Gift” introduced him to a wider global audience, while collaborations including “Ain’t Nobody” and “Moko Hoo” strengthened his cross-market profile.
His awards include Artiste of the Year at the Ghana Music Awards, Best New Entertainer at the International Reggae and World Music Awards, Best African Reggae/Dancehall Artist at the 2019 AFRIMMA Awards, and Most Influential Musician on Social Media in 2017. At the 2019 3Music Awards he won a record eleven awards in a single night, and in 2021 he received the International Reggae and World Music Award for Best Virtual Entertainer of the Year.
Beyond music, Shatta Wale has pursued acting and expanded the Shatta Movement Empire into a broader entertainment and business platform. Through his prolific recording output, entrepreneurial leadership, and sustained public influence, he has become one of the defining figures in Ghanaian and African popular music during the 2010s and 2020s.
