Charmaine Shamiso Mapimbiro, known professionally as Sha Sha, is a Zimbabwean-born singer and songwriter whose voice has become one of the defining elements of contemporary amapiano music. Widely celebrated as the “Queen of Amapiano,” she is admired for her smooth, emotive vocals and her ability to fuse soulful R&B textures with the rhythmic energy of South African dance music.
Born in Mutare, Zimbabwe, Sha Sha grew up in a modest and shifting family environment, spending parts of her childhood with relatives following her parents’ separation. Her early exposure to music came through church choirs, school performances, and informal vocal and piano training, which gradually shaped her musical identity. Although she once considered pursuing a career in nursing, her passion for music ultimately became impossible to ignore.
Her journey into professional music began when her work gained attention locally in Zimbabwe, eventually reaching acclaimed musician and producer Audius Mtawarira, who became an early mentor and helped refine her artistry. Her career trajectory changed significantly after relocating to South Africa, where she performed at small venues, events, and collaborations while working to establish herself in a highly competitive industry.
Sha Sha’s breakthrough came through her association with leading amapiano producers, particularly DJ Maphorisa and Kabza De Small, whose collaborations helped introduce her voice to a wider audience. Her features on popular tracks such as "Akulaleki," "Nge Thanda Wena," and "We Mama" quickly positioned her as one of the most recognizable female voices in the genre.
In 2019, she released her debut EP, "Blossom," a release that played a major role in her rise. The EP highlighted her versatility across soulful amapiano and R&B-influenced production, with standout tracks like "Tender Love," "You," "Sing It Back," and "Mutare." The release established her not just as a featured vocalist but as a standalone recording artist with a distinct sound and emotional depth.
Her growing impact was internationally recognized in 2020 when she won the BET Award for Best New International Act, becoming the first Zimbabwean artist to achieve this milestone. The award significantly elevated her profile and marked a turning point in her global recognition.
Building on this success, Sha Sha released her debut studio album, "I’m Alive" in 2022, a reflective and sonically expansive release that explored themes of growth, healing, identity, and resilience. The album expanded her musical range while staying rooted in the amapiano foundation that shaped her career.
