Sharon Dee, whose real name is Hlengiwe Dlamini, was born on April 16, 1973, in Durban, South Africa. She is a renowned South African vocalist and songwriter known for her ability to move effortlessly between township pop and gospel music. Growing up surrounded by rich musical influences, Sharon’s gift for singing was evident from an early age. During her school years in Durban, she began entering local talent shows, where her powerful voice and stage presence set her apart.
Her first major breakthrough came in the 1990s with the release of “Ngeke Ngikhohlwe,” a collaboration with M’du Masilela that brought her national recognition. This success established her as one of the prominent female voices in South Africa’s evolving pop scene. As her artistry matured, she found a new direction in gospel music, a shift shaped by personal experiences and spiritual growth. Her gospel projects, such as "Ungophakemeyo" and "The Gospel According to Sharon Dee" (2010), include uplifting songs like “Trust in the Lord” featuring Neyi Zimu, and “Entabeni Ekude (Walk in Jerusalem).”
In addition to her music, Sharon explored theatre, performing as Magdalene in the production African Passion, a fusion of opera, gospel, and African sounds. She also worked as a radio presenter on Mbokodo FM, where she encouraged and mentored emerging musicians.
Sharon was once married to Peter Ndlovu, a legendary Zimbabwean footballer, and they have children together. Though their marriage ended, she used that chapter of her life to rebuild herself emotionally and artistically.
