Journey
Sfiso Khanyile comes from Mbali township in Pietermaritzburg, where music was part of his daily environment long before it became a career. Growing up in a household where singing and instruments were already present, he developed his connection to music through family influence, especially from his mother’s singing and his father’s guitar playing. That early exposure gave him a practical understanding of music rather than a purely academic one.
He later took that foundation into formal study at the Durban University of Technology, where he focused on voice, composition, and arrangement. This period helped him organise his ideas and approach music with more structure, while still holding onto the cultural elements he started with.
In 2013, he released his debut album "Music Is Everywhere," a project that introduced how he approaches music, combining jazz-influenced arrangements with African-rooted themes and personal storytelling. The album reflects both his training and his background without separating the two.
His work extends beyond studio recording. On stage, he focuses on building a sense of continuity in his performances, often linking songs through themes of identity, memory, and everyday experience. His music moves across Afro-jazz, soul, and contemporary African styles, but remains grounded in personal and cultural expression rather than fixed genre boundaries.
