Working behind the scenes for years before stepping into the spotlight, Nondumiso Simelane, professionally known as Scoop (also written as Skoop), is a South African singer from Lamontville in Durban. She is widely recognized as the sister of Gqom star Babes Wodumo, though her journey in music stretches far beyond that connection.
Music came into her life very early. She has shared that she started singing as a toddler and always felt drawn toward performing. Growing up in Lamontville, a Durban area with strong musical influence, she was surrounded by sounds and culture that helped shape her creative path.
Before launching her solo career, she spent years working as a backing vocalist for gospel artists, gaining steady experience on stage and in studio environments. She was active in music for close to a decade before stepping out under her own name. Alongside performing, she also worked in artist management, including supporting her sister’s career, which gave her deeper insight into how the industry operates.
Her early involvement in Durban’s Gqom space included appearances on projects within that circle, although she later expressed interest in a wider musical direction beyond that sound.
In 2020, she officially introduced herself as a solo artist with the single “Dali” featuring Mdu. The release marked her transition into a personal career identity, separate from her sister’s fame.
Her preferred musical direction leans toward Afro-pop, Afro-soul, and jazz-influenced styles. She draws inspiration from artists such as Gloria Bosman, Zama Jobe, Siphokazi, Kelly Khumalo, Zandie Khumalo, and Naima Kay.
