Turning adversity into purpose became the foundation of Saigon’s path in music. Born Brian Daniel Carenard on July 13, 1977, in Brooklyn, his early years were shaped by street life and legal trouble before a prison sentence in the late 1990s pushed him toward reflection and writing. During that period he adopted the name Saigon, inspired by a Vietnam War book he read while incarcerated, and decided to pursue hip-hop after returning home.
Following his release in 2000, Saigon gained attention through mixtapes and underground performances across New York. Rising interest in his work eventually secured him a deal with Allido Records, the label founded by Rich Kleiman and Mark Ronson. Back then, Allido functioned as a J Records imprint under Sony BMG, giving Saigon early exposure within the Sony network.
He later continued his journey with labels including Atlantic Records, Amalgam Digital, and Suburban Noize Records. His catalogue eventually included the album The Greatest Story Never Told (2011), along with television appearances and collaborations across hip-hop. Through label struggles and career shifts, Saigon built a reputation rooted in persistence and determination to tell his story on his own terms.
