Sibusiso “S’bu Malawyer” Ntshangase is a celebrated South African kwaito artist, songwriter, and cultural figure whose career has helped shape the genre since the 1990s. Born in 1972 in Soweto and raised by his family, originally from KwaZulu-Natal, he grew up in township communities where music and dance were central to youth culture.
Early in life, he explored the performing arts and appeared in productions like Gibson Kente’s stage show "What A Shame" before turning to music full-time. His introduction to legendary musician Chicco Twala provided key industry experience, and he soon began making his own mark on kwaito, a South African music style blending house beats with township rhythm and narrative lyricism. In 1997, he released his debut solo album, "Amalawyer," which achieved significant recognition and helped establish S’bu as a solo artist rather than just a collaborator. He followed this with albums such as "Mzala" (1998) and "InjaYangasese" (2000), each reflecting his evolving sound and storytelling ability.
Over the years, S’bu also contributed to collective efforts like the TKZee Family project and collaborated with other Kwaito greats, maintaining his influence in the genre’s development. In 2025, he released a special album celebrating 25 years in music, and that year he marked the milestone with a commemorative event in Soweto that honored both his legacy and the broader history of kwaito.
Through his performances, recordings, and mentorship of new artists, S’bu Malawyer remains a respected name in South African music, bridging township roots with contemporary scenes while celebrating the cultural significance of kwaito.
