Robert Owens is an American singer, songwriter, DJ, and producer best known as one of the pioneering vocalists of Chicago house music. Born in August 1961 in Ohio, United States, he grew up singing in church, which strongly influenced his soulful vocal style.
He rose to prominence in the mid-1980s after meeting producer Larry Heard, leading to the formation of the influential house group Fingers Inc. Their work, including the album "Another Side," helped define the early Chicago house movement.
As a solo artist, Owens achieved international success with chart-topping dance tracks such as “I’ll Be Your Friend” and “Mine to Give,” which is a collaboration with Photek. In 1990, he released an album, "Rhythms in Me," which quickly lost visibility and returned in 1996 with "Ordinary People," a two-part EP recording. In 2003, he teamed up with drum and bass group London Elektricity to contribute vocals to their album "Billion Dollar Gravy." He later worked with Coldcut on their 2006 album "Sound Mirrors," featuring on the track “Walk a Mile in My Shoes.”
In 2007, he collaborated with Rob Pearson on the single “Escape from the Madness,” released through Plastic City. By 2011, he featured on Brookes Brothers’ track “Beautiful” and also worked with Dutch producer Icicle on “Step Forward” and “Redemption,” both included on Icicle’s debut album "Under the Ice."
In 2012, he appeared on Mosca’s track “Accidentally” and contributed to Orgue Electronique’s album "Strange Paradise" with the song “Our House.” He released “Trusting Me” through Kris Menace’s vocal collaboration project Features, with its video premiering on MTV Iggy in the United States in 2013.
Throughout his career, he has collaborated with major electronic and dance music figures including Frankie Knuckles, Satoshi Tomiie, Coldcut, and London Elektricity. His vocal style, emotional, spiritual, and soulful songs, has made him one of the most respected voices in house and electronic music.
