Journey
Movement between South African hip-hop and amapiano defines the career of Sizwe Alakine, born Sizwe Kevin Moeketsi on 30 June 1987 in Tembisa and raised in Katlehong, Gauteng. He first gained recognition as Reason before later adopting Sizwe Alakine as a new recording identity tied to his shift toward amapiano-influenced music.
He began recording around 2005, building early attention through battle rap circuits and collaborations with artists such as Ms Nthabi, ProVerb, Stogie T, Kwesta, and DJ Maphorisa. His early catalogue sits firmly within South African hip hop, supported by multiple releases under the Reason name.
The 2010 debut album “The Reasoning” marked his official entry into the industry, followed by “Audio High Definition” in 2014, which further strengthened his presence in hip hop. As amapiano expanded across South Africa, his creative direction gradually began to shift.
In 2021, he introduced the Sizwe Alakine identity, signalling a parallel lane in his career rather than a full departure from hip hop. This phase includes releases such as “Khanda Shisa” and multiple collaborations within amapiano circles.
As Sizwe Alakine, he has worked closely with producers and artists including Kabza De Small, DJ Maphorisa, and Young Stunna, mainly through featured appearances and joint projects rather than solo-led albums.
Across both identities, his catalogue reflects two active musical paths: Reason in hip hop and Sizwe Alakine in amapiano collaborations, forming a dual structure that continues to define his work.
