Phelo Bala is a South African singer, songwriter, and television personality whose career spans gospel, Afro-soul, contemporary African music, and family vocal collaborations. Born in KwaNobuhle, Eastern Cape, he was raised in a musically gifted family where both parents sang in church choirs and his grandfather was a respected choral composer. Following his brothers' path, he attended the prestigious Drakensberg Boys’ Choir School, where his vocal foundation was developed.
Phelo first gained national recognition as a member of The Bala Brothers, the vocal trio formed with his elder brothers, Zwai Bala and Loyiso Bala. With the group, he contributed to releases including "B3" (2006), "Live at Emperors Palace" (2013), and "Bala Brothers (Live)" (2015), helping establish the family as one of South Africa’s most celebrated vocal acts.
In 2011, Phelo joined the acclaimed gospel ensemble Joyous Celebration, where he performed until 2015 and further expanded his profile within South Africa’s gospel scene. The same year, he launched his solo career with the self-titled album "Phelo," introducing audiences to his distinctive vocal style and songwriting abilities.
His second solo album, "Ndim’Lo" in 2017, marked a significant artistic evolution. Blending Afro-soul, jazz, gospel, classical, and traditional African influences, the release drew heavily from his personal experiences and became the most recognized release of his solo career. The album reflected his journey of self-discovery and showcased a more mature, introspective approach to songwriting.
