Penny Penny, born Eric Kulani Giyani Nkovani in 1962, is one of South Africa’s most resilient and colorful cultural figures. Growing up in a massive polygamous household in Giyani, Limpopo, he was the youngest of 68 siblings. Because of his family’s financial struggles, he never attended school, spending his youth working manual labor jobs on farms and in the Carletonville gold mines.
His life changed in the early 1990s when he teamed up with producer Joe Shirimani. Despite having no musical training, Penny Penny recorded the groundbreaking album “Shaka Bundu,” in 1994. The project was an instant hit, selling hundreds of thousands of copies and pioneering the "Shangaan Disco" sound. His high-energy performances and signature top-knot hairstyle made him an unmistakable star during South Africa’s transition into democracy.
Penny Penny’s influence eventually extended beyond the stage. Driven by a desire to uplift his community, he became a politician, serving as a long-term ward councilor for the African National Congress (ANC) in Limpopo. He has consistently used his platform to fight for better infrastructure and resources for rural citizens.
In recent years, he reinvented himself as a reality TV sensation through his show, Papa Penny Ahee!. The program showcases his life as a father and community leader, winning over audiences with his humor and "Penny-English" catchphrases. From a mine worker to a global musical pioneer and political figure, Penny Penny’s journey is a testament to the power of self-belief and cultural pride.
