Pencil, born Samuel Moripe, was a South African artist and producer from Atteridgeville in Pretoria, known for his vibrant contribution to the country’s evolving dance-music landscape. Emerging from the energetic Bacardi scene—a township-rooted style that later fed into the rise of Amapiano—he became one of the voices helping shape a new generation of sound in Pretoria’s music culture.
Pencil first drew national attention through early hits such as Tshwara, Suna Papa, and Serope Ko Ntle, songs that carried a strong sense of local identity. His music blended the pulse of Kwaito, the bounce of Pretoria’s house influences, and the slang and charisma of township life, creating tracks that were both catchy and distinctly rooted in his community. His rising profile led to his signing with Sony Music Entertainment Africa, where he released New Age Kwaito in 2018. The project showcased his vision of merging traditional Kwaito textures with modern, dance-driven production, featuring collaborations with artists like Riky Rick, Thebe, and Villa.
Through his work, Pencil positioned himself as a bridge between the sounds of the past and the creativity shaping South Africa’s present music trends. Many listeners came to see him as one of the artists laying early groundwork for what would become Amapiano’s mainstream growth.
Pencil passed away in March 2023 after a long illness. He left behind a growing catalog and a legacy built on innovation, authenticity, and a deep connection to the rhythms of Pretoria’s streets.
