Perri Arlene Reid, better known as Pebbles, is a multifaceted talent whose legacy spans the heights of 1980s pop stardom and the complexities of music industry management. Born in Oakland, California, she first captured the public’s imagination with her 1987 self-titled debut, which produced the Top 5 hits "Girlfriend" and "Mercedes Boy." Known for her "modern glam" aesthetic and rhythmic vocal delivery, she became a staple of the MTV and BET eras, eventually selling over six million albums worldwide. Her second album, "Always," featured the classic "Giving You the Benefit," produced by the legendary duo L.A. Reid and Babyface.
Reid’s impact deepened as she moved into the executive suite. Through her company, Pebbitone, she discovered and meticulously branded the R&B trio TLC. Under her guidance, they became the best-selling American girl group of all time. This success, however, was overshadowed by intense legal battles; TLC famously filed for bankruptcy in 1995, alleging that Reid’s management contracts were exploitative. This conflict, coupled with the end of her marriage to LaFace Records co-founder L.A. Reid, led her to step away from the secular spotlight.
In 1997, she experienced a profound religious conversion and reinvented herself as "Sister Perri." Shifting her focus from charts to the pulpit, she founded Women of God Changing Lives (WOGCL) Ministries. Today, she remains an influential figure in Atlanta, serving as an ordained minister and occasionally returning to music through gospel projects that reflect her spiritual journey and personal resilience.
