Dr. Simon Dingane Gumbi, better known as Pastor Gumbi, was a revered South African preacher, evangelist, and gospel musician whose ministry and music deeply impacted communities across South Africa. Born in Standerton, Mpumalanga Province, Gumbi became known for his passionate sermons on Ukhozi FM, where his dynamic delivery and spiritual guidance inspired countless listeners.
In the 1980s, Pastor Gumbi established the SOS Choir (Saints of Salvation Choir) to bring his ministry into music, using gospel songs as a vehicle for worship and spiritual teaching. The choir’s music combines traditional African gospel, hymnal structures, and contemporary praise elements. Their recordings are primarily in Zulu, with occasional English verses, reflecting both local culture and the desire to reach broader audiences.
One of the choir’s notable releases is the 1993 album I Trust in Thee under Sony Music Entertainment Africa, featuring tracks like “I Trust in Thee,” “Ngazo Zonk’ Izinsuku,” “Laph’ Engiholela Khona,” and “Isimanga Somuntu.” The choir performed widely at churches, revivals, and Christian events, contributing to the rise of recorded gospel music in South Africa during the 1990s.
Beyond music, Pastor Gumbi’s influence extended through preaching, counseling, and radio ministry, emphasizing faith, unity, and spiritual growth. He passed away on 14 July 2025, leaving a legacy as a spiritual leader and gospel musician.
