Journey
Pale Phafane, known mononymously as Pale, is a South African singer-songwriter recognized for her soulful and jazzy vocal style. Her career began through a serendipitous encounter with Kwaito legend Arthur Mafokate, whom she first approached for an autograph while in primary school. Years later, her exceptional talent led Mafokate to sign her to his renowned label, 999 Music.
Pale released her debut album, Sing Me a Song, in 2019. The 15-track project established her as a distinctive voice in South African music, blending percussion-heavy rhythms with polished jazz influences. Notable tracks from the album include the titular lead single "Sing Me a Song," the trumpet-infused "Musa Ukungivalela," and the rhythmic "Ngiyabonga".
Her emergence at 999 Music drew immediate comparisons to the award-winning artist Lira, who also began her journey at the same label. Beyond her solo work, Pale has contributed to collective projects, such as the 2015 SAADA Legacy collaboration. She remains a celebrated figure for bringing a refined, soulful "breath of fresh air" to the South African music scene.
