Ona Dema, born Onaedo Obiekwe in Enugu State, Nigeria, is a singer-songwriter and visual artist known for her unique blend of Afro-pop and Afro-EDM. She currently resides in Toronto, Canada. Before fully diving into music, she studied psychology at Caritas University, where she also performed in a girl group, covering popular Nigerian hits for friends and social media followers.
Her professional music journey began in 2018 with the release of “Waka Waka,” followed by the breakout Afro-pop ballad “Calm Down” in 2019, which highlighted her soft, expressive singing style. Early experience interning at Lagos’s Cool FM gave her valuable insight into the workings of the music industry.
Ona Dema initially built her fanbase independently, sharing self-released tracks and connecting with listeners online. In January 2020, she signed with Sony Music West Africa, marking a significant milestone. Her first release under Sony, “No Time” featuring Dremo, showcased her signature fusion of Afro-pop and EDM while expanding her audience.
She continued to explore her musical range with tracks such as “Feeling” (2020) featuring Sigag Lauren, “Krazy” (2021), “Heart On Fire” (2022), and “Palm Tree” (2023), leading up to her 2025 EP 'I Just Want You To Know,' which includes four new songs like “You Must Be Mad” and “Bebito.” These releases illustrate her evolution from an emerging independent artist to a Sony-signed musician experimenting with diverse sounds.
Ona Dema has collaborated with artists including Dremo, Sigag Lauren, Emk the Genie, and Trapp, and shared the stage with Johnny Drille during his 2024 Canadian tour. Her performances have reached both Canadian and Nigerian audiences, including Afrofest Toronto (2023) and Toronto’s HISTORY venue.
Her music blends Afrobeat, pop, R&B, and EDM, reflecting her self-described “genre bender” approach. She draws inspiration from Nigerian icons like Fela Kuti and Lagbaja, as well as international stars such as Beyoncé and Sia. Her songs are noted for emotive depth and her canary-like vocal delivery, combining intimacy with confidence.
Beyond music, Ona Dema is a visual artist and founder of the art collective 'Art in a Cave.' She keeps her personal life largely private, occasionally sharing insights into her faith and creative process.
