Guehi Glai Léon was born in Koulinlé, located in the Logoualé sub-prefecture of western Côte d'Ivoire. Growing up in a devout household, his early musical inspiration came from the traditional spiritual songs performed by his mother in their local church. Seeking to formalize his artistic ambitions, he relocated to the capital city of Abidjan in 1990. He spent several years refining his craft as a percussionist and backing singer for various established acts before his breakthrough in 1997, when he earned first place in the Cocody Rock Stars talent competition.
His recording career is defined by a fusion of African rhythms and contemporary gospel arrangements. His 2002 album, "La Prophétie," established him as a commercial force in Francophone Africa, followed by the successful 2006 project "Lousha (Lèves-toi!)." Throughout his career, he has produced tracks such as "Plus que l'or," "Pardon Seigneur," and "Wouhooo Jésus a gagné," the latter of which garnered millions of views on digital platforms. His work is noted for its linguistic diversity, often featuring lyrics in French and local Ivorian languages.
Beyond his musical output, Mala is an active figure in the Ivorian cultural sector, having received the Tiercé d'Or in 2008 in recognition of his contributions to the national arts. In 2026, he remains prolific, releasing collaborative projects like "Alléluia" and focusing on spiritual mentorship for younger artists.
