Journey
Nothi Ntuli was a quietly influential figure in South African maskandi, remembered less for headline moments and more for the depth of his contribution behind the curtain. He started playing guitar in the mid 1980s and, over time, became recognised for his discipline, adaptability, and strong respect for tradition. His strength lay in collaboration. Nothi had the rare ability to support different artists while still leaving a clear imprint of his own identity on the work.
One of the most defining chapters of his career was his long working relationship with Thokozani Langa, where he contributed across more than twenty albums. This level of continuity reflected not just skill, but trust and shared understanding. His career also included work with Busi Mhlongo, Thandiswa Mazwai, Siphokazi, Khuzani Mpungose, Arthur Mafokate, and others, cutting across generations and styles.
Beyond musicianship, Nothi was known for his engaging presence and subtle humour during performances. He passed away in March 2022 after a long illness. His legacy lives on through the many records and artists shaped by his steady hand and commitment to craft.
