Nontokozo Hlengwa, better known as Nontokozo Mkhize, has rapidly become a transformative force in South African music. A rare ability to meld spiritual depth with mainstream appeal, a feat that has earned her the title of "Queen of Streaming" within the Gospel and Afro-soul communities, defines her impact.
Hailing from the township of Inanda, outside Durban in KwaZulu-Natal, Nontokozo’s early life was centered around the church, where she developed her vocal foundation. After completing her school years, she began her professional career in 2017. She spent nearly seven years honing her craft as a high-profile backup vocalist for industry giants such as Benjamin Dube, Sjava, and Mondli Ngcobo. Her "notice moment" arrived when her social media covers caught the attention of Sjava, leading to a prominent feature on his critically acclaimed album "Isibuko."
Her solo discography took off with the 2024 breakout single "Moyongcwele," followed by the record-shattering "Esandleni." The latter made history on Spotify South Africa by becoming the most-streamed solo song by a female artist in a single week, even surpassing international figures like Adele. In late 2025, she released her debut studio album, "Lindiwe (Deluxe)," which further demonstrated her versatility through collaborations with Kelvin Momo and Nomfundo Moh.
Her rapid ascent is reflected in her award achievements, including Best Newcomer at the 2024 Metro FM Music Awards and Best Newcomer of the Year at the South African Music Awards (SAMA). Entering 2026, she reached a new milestone by winning Best Female Artist in Southern Africa at the AFRIMA awards in Lagos.
