Journey
Nomcebo Nothule Zikode, known as Nomcebo, is a South African singer, songwriter, and performer whose remarkable journey from backing vocalist to international award-winning artist has made her one of the most respected voices in African music. Best known as the co-writer and vocalist behind the global hit “Jerusalema,” she has become a symbol of perseverance, talent, and artistic excellence.
Born in Hammarsdale, KwaZulu-Natal, Nomcebo discovered her love for music at an early age. Long before achieving international recognition, she spent more than fifteen years working behind the scenes as a backing vocalist for some of South Africa’s most established artists, including Deborah Fraser, Zahara, Lundi Tyamara, and Nhlanhla Nciza. Those years helped shape her distinctive vocal style and deep understanding of the music industry.
Her career began to gain momentum through collaborations with producer DJ Ganyani, particularly on the successful single “Emazulwini,” which earned a South African Music Awards nomination for Record of the Year and introduced her to a wider audience.
In 2019, Nomcebo's life changed dramatically when she collaborated with Master KG on “Jerusalema.” As both the lead vocalist and co-writer, she helped create a song that transcended borders, languages, and cultures. The record became a worldwide phenomenon, inspired the viral Jerusalema Dance Challenge, topped charts across several countries, and established her as a global star.
Following the success of "Jerusalema," she stepped fully into the spotlight with the release of her debut album, "Xola Moya Wam," in 2020, which produced popular singles such as "Xola Moya Wam" and "Bayabuza." The release showcased her strength as a solo artist and songwriter, proving that her success extended far beyond a single hit record. She later secured an exclusive global publishing agreement with Sony Music Publishing, further expanding her international reach.
Throughout her career, Nomcebo has received numerous accolades, including a Grammy Award for Best Global Music Performance for "Bayethe" alongside Zakes Bantwini and Wouter Kellerman. She has also earned recognition from the South African Music Awards, Forbes Woman Africa Awards, and several other prestigious platforms.
Nomcebo Zikode is celebrated not only for her powerful voice and songwriting ability but also for her inspiring story of persistence. Her rise from years of supporting other artists to becoming one of Africa’s most recognised musical ambassadors reflects a career built on dedication, faith, and an enduring passion for music.
