Niel Schoombee is a South African songwriter, composer, performer, and music executive best known as the founding member of the Afrikaans pop vocal group Hi-5. Over two decades, he has established himself as one of the most commercially successful Afrikaans songwriters of his generation, contributing extensively to the development of Afrikaans pop music.
Born and raised in Pretoria, South Africa, Schoombee completed a BCom degree at the University of Pretoria before furthering his studies through UNISA. Early in his career, he worked in the entertainment division at Disneyland in California, an experience that strengthened his interest in live performance and theatrical production. After returning to South Africa, he entered the music industry full-time and co-founded Hi-5 in 2003.
Hi-5 quickly became one of the most visible Afrikaans male vocal groups of the 2000s. The group won the ATKV Crescendo competition in 2003 and later represented South Africa in Eurovision-related events. Their releases included "Soebat" (2003), "Hi-5" (2004), and "Versoeking" (2006), blending Afrikaans pop with international crossover influences. The group toured extensively across South Africa and Europe, including performances in Spain and London’s Royal Albert Hall.
Following the group’s peak years, Schoombee transitioned into artist development, A&R, and songwriting through Select Music, which later became the Afrikaans division of Sony Music South Africa. In this role, he contributed to the careers and recordings of numerous Afrikaans artists while overseeing creative production, repertoire selection, branding, music videos, and album development. Industry profiles credit him with writing more than 700 songs, many of which achieved commercial success in South Africa and the Netherlands through translated adaptations.
His songwriting catalogue includes collaborations with artists such as Romanz, Nianell, Elizma Theron, and several leading Afrikaans performers. Songs written or co-written by Schoombee include “My Angel,” “Glaskasteel,” and “Daar Is ’n Plek.”
In 2019, Schoombee received the Songwriter of the Year award in the Afrikaans music industry, recognizing his extensive contribution to commercial songwriting and artist development. Later industry recognition also acknowledged him among the leading Afrikaans lyricists and producers.
Beyond music, Schoombee has been involved in live event production and entertainment management, including the conceptual development of the annual KRONE concert productions in South Africa. In recent years, he relocated to Brisbane, Australia, while remaining connected to creative and entrepreneurial ventures.
