Sonia Aletta Nel, widely known by her stage name Nianell, is a Namibian‑born singer, songwriter, pianist, and guitarist whose music blends elements of folk, pop, R&B, country, classical, and Celtic influences.
Born in Omaruru, Namibia, she grew up in nearby Windhoek before moving to South Africa for formal music training. There she completed a diploma in light music at Pretoria Technikon and furthered her classical studies at London’s Trinity College and the University of South Africa.
Her debut album, "Who Painted the Moon?" released in 2002, was a project that helped establish her as a major voice on South African airwaves. The title song gained international exposure when New Zealand artist Hayley Westenra covered it on her platinum‑selling album "Pure."
This success continued with follow-up projects that helped build her reputation in Southern Africa. She notably released "Angel Tongue" in 2004, followed by "Life’s Gift" in 2006 and "I Know I’m Lucky" in 2008. Subsequent albums included "Sand & Water" (2010), "My Heart" (2012), and "Just Be" (2014). In addition to these solo albums, she recorded collaborative projects and live recordings over the years, demonstrating both consistency and range in her musical output. In 2024, she released the EP "Love Is Home," a project inspired by personal themes of love and loss.
Nianell has received multiple South African Music Awards, including honors for Best English Contemporary Album and Best Female Songwriter, and she has toured internationally. She has shared stages with global artists and remains active as a performer, songwriter, and inspirational voice in contemporary music.
