Sinenhlanhla Mthembu, popularly known as Nana Atta, is a South African R&B, Afro-soul, and hip-hop vocalist whose artistry blends emotional storytelling with contemporary urban and Afro-house soundscapes. Raised in Verulam, north of Durban, she grew up in a musically expressive environment where songwriting became a form of emotional release from a young age.
She began writing songs at around 11, initially for her family choir, later becoming a school choir leader. This early foundation shaped her vocal control, harmony awareness, and narrative-driven approach to music. Her transition into professional artistry was gradual, built through years of collaborations before stepping fully into solo identity.
Before her solo debut, Nana Atta built recognition through features and writing contributions in South Africa’s electronic and urban music scene, working closely with producers such as Zakes Bantwini and Karyendasoul. These collaborations positioned her within the Afro-house movement even before her formal solo debut.
Her official debut release came in 2021 with the EP “U Ok Love?”, a body of work that marked her first fully realized artistic statement. The EP reflected emotional vulnerability, relationship struggles, and self-reflection, and served as her introduction as a solo-led artist after years of collaborative work. It established her identity as a singer capable of translating personal emotion into structured Afro-soul and R&B storytelling.
Following her debut EP, Nana Atta gained wider recognition through a series of major collaborations that expanded her reach in Afro-house and global dance music. One of her most significant breakthrough moments came with “iMali” in 2021 alongside Karyendasoul and Zakes Bantwini, a track that achieved major radio success and platinum certification in South Africa. This positioned her voice at the center of one of the country’s most impactful Afro-tech records.
Her vocal presence also appears across notable releases such as “Abantu,” “Amanga,” and “Night Vision,” where she consistently contributes emotionally rich, atmospheric vocal layers that contrast and elevate rhythmic production.
