NOTBENJAMIN, the artistic moniker of Benjamin Zolile Gewer, is a cornerstone of South Africa’s contemporary hip-hop and alternative music landscape. As a multi-hyphenate producer, recording artist, and engineer, Gewer has redefined the "Gauteng sound" by merging dark, atmospheric trap with experimental electronic textures. His work acts as a bridge between the gritty energy of the underground and the polished appeal of the mainstream, earning him a reputation as one of the most prolific collaborators in the industry.
Gewer’s rise to prominence reached a fever pitch in January 2022 with the release of the massive 24-track compilation, NOTBENJAMIN & FRIENDS. This project served as a cultural manifesto, uniting a diverse roster of talent including Blxckie, Priddy Ugly, Kashcpt, and J Molley. By positioning himself as both a primary producer and a curator, Gewer demonstrated a unique ability to tailor his spacey, synth-heavy production to the distinct vocal styles of over twenty different artists, ranging from melodic R&B to high-octane rap.
Beyond the studio, Gewer is a vital community architect. He is the founder of TREETFET, a Johannesburg-based festival that has become a sanctuary for hip-hop culture.
