Espen Sørensen, known by his stage name Mzungu Kichaa, is a Danish-born musician who has become a foundational figure in the East African Bongo Flava music scene. Born in Denmark in 1980, he moved to Tanzania at the age of six when his parents relocated for development work. Growing up in Dar es Salaam and later attending school in Kilimanjaro, he became fluent in Swahili and deeply immersed himself in local musical traditions.
His professional journey began in the late 1990s at the iconic Bongo Records, where he worked as a producer, guitarist, and vocalist alongside legends like Juma Nature and Professor Jay. It was during this time that Juma Nature gave him the nickname "Mzungu Kichaa" (meaning "Crazy White Person") as a tribute to his remarkable fluency in Swahili and his unconventional, energetic stage presence.
Despite his deep roots in Tanzania, Sørensen pursued academic excellence abroad, earning a BA in Ethnomusicology and an MA in African Studies in the United Kingdom. He returned to his music career as a solo artist, launching the acclaimed album “Tuko Pamoja,” in 2009. His hit single "Jitolee" solidified his status as a mainstream star in
Beyond performing, Sørensen is a significant industry leader. He founded Caravan Records, a label dedicated to promoting East African artists globally, and served as a judge on the popular television show Bongo Star Search. Mzungu Kichaa remains active releasing new "Swanglish" singles like "Washa Moto" and touring internationally. His work continues to bridge the cultural gap between Europe and Africa, advocating for social issues and the power of education through music.
