Journey
Moscow Dollar, the stage name of Moses Mabhasa, is a transformative figure in the South African electronic and township music scene. Born in Soweto and raised in the vibrant streets of Atteridgeville, Pretoria, Mabhasa’s journey began behind the decks as a high school DJ in 2006. By 2008, his ambition shifted from spinning records to creating them, leading him to develop a sound that bridges the gap between traditional heritage and modern club culture.
He is widely celebrated as a pioneer of Xigaza, a high-octane genre that marries the linguistic richness of XiTsonga with the frantic, percussive energy of Pretoria’s Barcadi music. As a co-founder of the N’wana Mhani Crew, Mabhasa helped elevate this localized sound to the national stage. His music is characterized by "psychedelic" synth lines and relentless polyrhythms that demand movement, but beneath the dancefloor-ready beats lies a deeper narrative. His lyrics frequently explore the complexities of township life, touching on themes of resilience, family dynamics, and the pursuit of success amidst economic hardship.
Mabhasa’s career reached new heights in 2025 with the release of "Kagaza," a collaborative project with DJ Dadaman under the influential Nyege Nyege Tapes label. This project garnered international attention, showcasing his ability to innovate within the Amapiano and Barcadi landscapes. Moving into 2026, he continues to be a prolific force, collaborating with heavyweights like Mellow & Sleazy. Beyond his own discography, Moscow Dollar is committed to mentorship, aiming to build a music empire that provides a platform for aspiring artists from disadvantaged backgrounds.
